NAF Open Enrollment: October 28 - November 29, 2019 -- Taking Care of You!

NAF Personnel ServicesOctober 16, 2019

The Open Enrollment period will be here very soon! Monday, October 28 is the first day and it closes on Friday, November 29.

Open Enrollment is the time of year when NAF employees can make changes to their health and life insurance plans. It’s during this time that employees have the opportunity to make changes that they may have missed doing during the past year.  Remember, changes made during the Open Enrollment period are effective January 1, 2020.  Deductions normally will reflect on the employee’s Leave and Earning Statement in early February, 2020.

In recent years, NAF employees had one healthcare option, the Choice POS II Plan. The DoD Health Benefits Plan is offering another option for Calendar Year (CY) 2020:  a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) with a Health Savings Account (HSA). Here are some basic differences between the POS II and the HDHP:

Choice POS II Plan

High Deductible Health Plan

Higher premium

Lower premium

Lower deductibles

Higher deductibles

Same network of doctors, hospitals and pharmacies and same services covered

Same network of doctors, hospitals and pharmacies and same services covered

No Health Savings Account

Option to invest money in a Health Savings Account (HSA)

The Choice POS II Plan has a higher premium cost, but NAF employees pay less in deductibles. It can be a good choice for those who generally may have higher medical costs throughout the year and would benefit from a lower deductible.

The HDHP, on the other hand, may be well-suited for employees with lower medical costs throughout the plan year. Paying less in premium costs while taking advantage of the Health Saving Account program will allow the participant to save health care dollars by investing those dollars in the Health Savings Account (HSA).  The possibility of paying for medical services with the Health Savings Account (HSA) dollars also saves the participant out of pocket costs.  Health Savings Accounts are available for CONUS employees only.  Health Reimbursement Accounts will be offered to OCONUS employees.  For further information, please visit the NAF Health Plans site.

Alex, the on-line training tool, will be available to help NAF employees determine which option, POS II or HDHP, is best for them, based on their personal financial and healthcare needs.  Go to the NAF Health Plans site and link onto Alex.  He’ll do the math for you!

Open Enrollment is the time to make sure your mailing address is correct in your personnel file.  The address on file is the one used to send all of your healthcare information to you.  We recommend loading the Aetna app to your smart phone…healthcare at your fingertips.  If you are in an HMO plan, please see the respective HMO website for your plan information.  You can also verify your retirement/401(k) contributions during your visit to the Human Resource Office.
